Which is the better, or at least most popular, usage of the
term: "Daycare" or "Day care"? A regular google web search
shows twice as many hits for the latter as for the former, but
"Daycare" *seems* like the more common usage to be.

Checking googlerankings, my website (www.daycare.rocky-dog.com),
shows up google #21, yahoo #6, and msn #6 in search results
using Calgary+dog+daycare, but isn't even on the radar
screen using Calgary+dog+day+care.

I've revamped my content to include some instances of "day
care", but I'm not sure whether it'll do any good. In fact, it
may do some harm, perhaps giving me mediocre rankings in both
search phrases rather than pretty good results with one.

Most people I know tend to write daycare. I think my spellchecker
wants it to be two words, though.

Both the dog and human daycares we use, use 'Daycare'. That
seems to be the more common usage to me too.

What a lot of people do is have it one way on the visible
web page and stick the alternative in a meta tag so that
it's indexed using both terms.

Are you saying baby Jesus can't read meta tags?

Which is what I did - my content temporarily had "Day Care"
while <head> stuff used "Daycare", but I decided to change it
all back to Daycare before the spider 'bots return.

Hey Matt --

Great Website! And I agree with you that the web is the way
to go. It's what I always do when I'm looking for a new business.
You can get so much more information than you can from the
phonebook, and you don't have to commit yourself to calling.
(I hate the phone!)

I was recently looking for kennels, though I have an adequate
one I've used for a long time. My normal kennel's website
bragged, "[We have ] The Best and Most Informative Website
Of All Local Pet Boarding Facilities" Which rather immediately
turned me off. Who cares which kennel has the best *website*?
I'd like the kennel with the best dog care of course.

Not that this applies to you, except that you really need to be
careful as to how you come across, because you never know
how even the most minor thing is going to catch someone's eye.

Are you looking for any feedback?

According to yahoo searches for May 2005, Day Care is far more preferred by
people doing searches.

*Dog Day Care* got 8228 hits
*Doggie Day Care* got 4762 hits so you may want to add doggie day care as a meta
tag.

Well, remembering that you get what you pay for, take these for
what they're worth. ;-) But here are my suggestions:

1. Condense those three paragraphs of location information into
one or two sentences. You can put more on the "Location" page,
but the home page should be more focused on what you have to
offer, rather than where you are.

2. Shrink the house picture a bit, and add a couple of pictures
of dogs playing, or relaxing, or in general looking happy and
content. The pictures in your picture gallery are great! And
that's the kind of thing I love to see on a website. Unfortunately,
I couldn't enlarge the thumbnails. I don't know if that's a bug
on the page, or just my browser acting up.

3. Add something to the home page to talk about why they
should consider bringing their dog to you. I dunno -- talk about
loneliness or separation anxiety, or some such, and how much
happier the dogs are with the socialization and interaction they
get at a quality day care.

4. Consider adding a testimonials page, a FAQ page, and a
"daily schedule page."

That's about it. I love the picture gallery, as I said, and also
the "about me" and "philosophy" pages.

My location *is* the big thing, which is why I'm extra clear on
the index page. I've done a lot of technical writing and don't
like this presentation any better than you, but that part's
going to stay - I've got to include all of the landmarks in the
opening words. The current google grab isn't one I like, so
I've styled my opening paragraphs to hopefully present well on
what the search engines display.

Good point. That would also give me a chance to add a few more
alt tags to the index page.

That page loads relatively slowly in IE (IE apparently doesn't
support the preload function very well). If you give it time
to load, and have javascript enabled, once you hover the mouse
over a thumbnail the picture will be displayed. It's much
faster with Firefox.

FWIW, I did it this way for a reason. Most of the pictures are
of dogs which aren't mine, so I don't want the pictures easily
collected. There's nothing I can do to stop people from
grabbing pictures, but I *can* make them think about how to do
it.

Other that a FAQ, those are things which I've been meaning to
do, but haven't yet.

Thanks! And thanks for the suggestions, too.

Actually yes you can. You can watermark them, or you can do a little
script which will add an empty gif over the top of them. Email me privately.

Properly watermarking/tracking involves money I don't have, but
I'll certainly contact you about the empty gif. Thanks!
