Our 5 year old dachshund had surgery last year on one of his disks. He
seemed to recover from that fairly well, but he keeps having episodes of
pain. A milogram showed that he doesn't really need surgery again. These
episodes have happened five times since his surgery in June 2002 and have
been apprx every 2 1/2 months. He tightens up in his back area and goes
into an almost seizure like state. We immediately take him to the vet and
he gets shots for pain, anti-inflammitory, and a muscle relaxor. We give
him pills and confine him for 4 to 5 days and he is back to his normal self,
with no sign of discomfort until the whole thing happens again. He does not
jump on the furniture anymore and from what we can tell, there is no one
sure cause of this. Has anyone had similar experience with this? The vets
have been very helpful, but can't give us much explanation as to what is
causing this.

Gosh... same thing often happens with people who have the same type of
back surgery.... It is one of those things that "just happens" once
the original back problem occurs, and it can continue after surgery....
but for a different, and mainly misunderstood reason. The muscles are
just more likely to go into spasm. .. but the spasm stops sooner... with
treatment. If he turns wrong or rolls wrong.... who knows?

A friend who has a mini-dachs who has also had surgery to relieve a disc
that slipped and caused paralysis says that his episodes of back spasm
have seemed to decrease over time.... So if you and your pooch are
fortunate, this may work out in that direction!

Go with Adequan!
Avoid Rymadyl.

No people food and lots of exercise.
I've had 3 Dachies and 2 have had back problems. Mostly due to overeating.
