We have a problem with a new discus that we have just bought about a week
ago. He seemed to be doing great with the 1 other discus in our 35 gallon
tank. He ate and didn't seem to be nervous at all. Then I notice today
that one of his eyes has a cloudy patch over some of it. I didn't see
anything else that looked unordinary. Also one of our tetras that we have
had with about 6 others had floated up to the to and died. This really
scares me!!! I did a partial 30% water change.

Hi Jonathan

We have had the same problem with our tank.. We had 12 discus of different
sizes in a large tank with a pleco and some rummy-nose tetra.

BE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING WITH MEDICATING DISCUS!! That's not me
shouting, that's because they are a law unto themselves! This is how I was
recommended to solve the problem and it worked and I managed to keep all but
the weakest fish alive.. Your case is so similar to mine but it escalated
with remarkable speed. One evening a fish is looking poorly, clouded eyes
and thickened slime, within 24 hours they were all darkening, stressed,
listing and very bad!...

Start with massive water changes, 50% if possible using RO water and carbon
filtered water to a microsiemen reading of between 250 and 500.

Remove the poorly fish to a smaller tank where these changes can be made if
possible.

Try not to put any of your tank water in with him.

Stop feeding or give small treats that don't pollute/cloud the tank.

Monitor the other fish closely.

Raise the hospital tank temperature to 31/32 degrees centigrade.

You should get an improvement without the need for medication.

Hope that helps

Darren

yeah, don't medicate discus when they don't need it.

they will probably be okay with the plan Darren outlined.

if you wanted to help things along maybe some mela-fix because it is a very
gentle anti-bacterial and will prevent against them getting sick in their
weakend condition.
