I've visted the initial link to the 'isn't farming horrible' website
and would like to pose the following questions:
1. When and Where were these pictures taken?
It is absolutely true that farming has not always focused on the health
and welfare of the animals. However, over the past years there has
been strict enforcment of federal, state, and local laws which have
reduced and practiacally eliminated this kind of animal housing. While
majoring in Animal Science I visited mulitple pig farms and can state
for a fact that almost all pigs I have seen were group housed in an
area were they had plenty of room to walk around. The exceptions to
this were 1. if the farm keeps an un-nutered male for use in breeding.
This is because un-nutered males are know for being aggressive and so
must be kept away from the other pigs to reduce fighting. 2. if the
farm houses pregnant females. A few days before the farmers expect the
female pig to give birth they put her in a specially designed smaller
crate. This is so that the piglets are not trampled to death by the
rest of the herd (and to prevent the mother from rolling over ontop of
her piglets and killing them). My knowedge about chickens is far less
extensive, so I will not comment on them.
2. Who is responsible for taking these pictures?
There is a lot of information available on the web. You should always
pay attention to who is giving you information and if they are a
credible source. I've clicked on all the links and found no reference
to the organization or private individual who posted these pictures.
So, I Googled SHAW (from the web address). A brief scroll through the
results gave me a cable company, a flooring company, a university, a
theatre, and a company that sells pipes. So, who is SHAW? What do
they stand for? Do they have an ulterior motive?
If you want to learn about farming, visit a farm not a web-site
published by an unkown source with pictures taken at an unknown time.
You would be amazed at how much thought and planning goes into
protecting the health and welfare of these animals.
