Terri and Co. are going to have to ride out the storm. In e-mail she
said:
"Well,it looks like the game plan has changed everybody.
Since Paul's boss wouldn't let him leave early,it's too late
for us to get out. It took him 3.5 hours and 1/2 tank of
gas to travel 30 miles last night on I12. That was without
the trailer weight. We figure the odds are high that if
we left last night, we'd probably run out of gas in between
gas stations that hadn't yet been depleted, and the stations
had started running out shortly after they announced the evacuation
of New Orleans around 10am. Had we been able to leave
when I was sent home, we might have made it.
Now we know we need a minimum of a 2 day window to safely
evacuate, but that's a moot point for this storm.
The good news is,the local stations think the worst we'll get
where we are, is tropical force winds of between 40-50 mph,
with gust of up to 70mph. I've been in winds that high in
Wyoming before, without the water though.
The plan is as before: When it's over we'll find a way to contact
Jeff and he'll contact Dara and you, Jewels, and Kevin.
*Jewels, please don't forget to let Kim know because her sister
who was supposed to come in on Saturday no doubt has had
her plane cancelled. I say "no doubt" because there's always
a chance for major stupidity down here as in they are still_charging
tolls on the Causeway for exiting New Orleans in that direction, if
you can believe it. (I see George over there nodding his head in
agreement.)
We should see the weather start to deteriorate around noon or so,
and we're moving the trailer next to the garage so if it tips it won't
smash into the house. We also plan on making a "mattress cave" for all
of us in the hallway which is the safest place to be that doesn't have
any windows. We'll be fine, I'm sure. I'll be talking to you all in a
few days. Take care."

Thanks for passing this on Paula. I wouldn't be worried about the winds
it's the flooding which in New Orleans could be well over 18' in that
city. I hope it doesn't come in there but it sure looks as though it
may.
So building mattresses in the hallway isn't going to do a lot of
good unless they will float out the door. Doesn't Terri have
a boat? I sort of remember that she does.

Good luck to Terri riding it out, and to Susan F wherever she is. And to
anyone else in its huge swath of a path.

Indeed, good luck to all in the path. This one is big and nasty.
I fear what it is going to do to the Mississippi River.

I know she liked to go fishing, but I don't know if she had a boat or
not. Hopefully, the mattresses will work for the winds and then the
roof will work for the water. Since she can't get out at this point,
all we can do is hope for everything to be okay. Of course, top of
the hope list is that it bypasses her all together. Give me
earthquakes any time!

I think both flooding and winds are a pretty big worry. The winds are still
sustained at 135mph. By contrast, Isabel, which was 'only' a tropical storm
by the time it hit here last year, tore roofs off houses and had sustained
winds of 45 and was gusting around 60mph.
I heard a story on NPR of a guy in NO who's riding it out (he sent his
wife, kids, and dogs away) because his house, under a big renovation and
not easily secured, is vulnerable to flooding and looters. He told of how
there was a port-a-john on his property for the construction crew, and of
how he'd secured it to the house with a garden hose so it wouldn't blow
away or into something or someone.
Good luck, everyone.

Indeed. But the thing about flooding is sometimes you can't get away as
the water is rushing through the streets. Winds of course are bad.

Yep, I am aware of that. If your roof is torn off it sure isn't good,
but the mattresses in the hallway will work for that. But it sure won't
keep the floods from coming into the house. I have seen houses
completely covered in which you can't even see the house at all from
flooding rains in Texas.

Indeed good luck to everyone. I wouldn't want it coming my way.

What do you do in that situation, though? I read that at least in one place
in Ivan's path, there simply aren't any shelters built to withstand a
category 4. So if you're staying home, you should have both mattresses to
shelter from debris and a boat nearby to get on top of the water when it
comes?
Yikes.

You can't do anything to get away from flash floods which are what Gwen is
referring to. Back in '88 during Hugo, a town north of Charleston called
McClellanville had its entire shelter flooded by a huge tidal surge. They
were in the brick 2-story school when out of nowhere water came crashing
through the windows & doors quickly filling up the first floor and climbing
to the second. Just about everyone in the town was in that building at the
time so they all started swimming for the top and trying to get to the
second story. They ended up on the roof because the water willed the second
story of the school as well. You have to be able to swim, preferably have
life jackets handy and if there's a rowboat somewhere accessible then you're
in business. You're not safe in a house though.
