I have just transferred my mice over into a CritterTrail 2 cage, after
living all of their lives with me in a 10 gallon aquarium. The move was
done mostly for purposes of ventilation. Their aquarium did have all kinds
of ladders and tubes and a wheel so they wouldn't be bored.
I have found a couple of issues that I wonder if anyone has had experience
with. The worst one is that my oldest mouse, who is almost 2, can figure
out how to go DOWN the funnels between levels, but I'm not sure she knows
how to go up them yet. After their first night in there, I found her this
morning sleeping on the ground floor, alone and uncovered. She's just
getting over a respiratory infection and it is troubling that she was alone.
This morning I put her back up on the balcony where the house is, and she
went right to sleep with the others. The first floor is too small to put
the house down there (the wheel is in the way) and I can't force her up the
tubes. Is she confused because of her age? Stubborn?
The second problem is access to my mice. Yes there are 2 doors and one trap
door on the top - but no flip top lid for the whole cage, so that accessing
any mouse in the sleeping area (to give antibiotics to, for example) means
either taking the whole cage apart, or moving their house around to the
point they all run out, which I don't like.
I haven't even tried cleaning this new cage yet. Ugh. I spent alot of
money on it and would like to use it. The aquarium was easier for me but
I'm not sure it was as good for the mice. Any suggestions?

if the mice like the crittertrail and you don't mind cleaning it, then of
course use it.
I always used those large plastic storage boxes you can get at walmart or
kmart. 18 inch tall sides they couldn't jump, so you can leave the top off and
access them freely. cheap. easy to clean. and good for something else when
your mice finally go to that big cheese warehouse in the sky. only problem
with them was I had to clean the water bowl just about every day.

I have a Crittertrail 2. My mice love it. They rarely use the tubes to get
up and down onto the shelves, preferring instead to just climb up and down
the wire sides. I also have added some extensions to it -- extra pipes and a
little tower.
I hated the giant space-hogging wheel it came with (especially because it was
maddeningly rattly), so I got rid of it and put a smaller standard
free-standing wheel in its place. With that change, there is enough room to
put a small mouse house on the first floor.
Crittertrails have tubes that are a lot easier to climb than some other
brands, so I haven't had any problems with mice refusing to climb. However,
when I was a kid I had a Hartz cage, and one of my mice couldn't get up the
tubes. So I took a long piece of wire and bent it into a ladder and put that
through the tube. Then he had no problem using it at all. Maybe you could
try that.

It's not very hard to just pop the top off the cage. There are tabs on
either side of it so you can lift it off. I guess I'm lucky -- my mice
mostly nest in the "petting zone."
If you have a dishwasher, that's a good way to give a thorough cleaning to a
Crittertrail. It comes up sparkling clean.

I've had some of the same problems, and finally went to those clear plastic
Kritter Keepers. They have plenty of ventilation, due to the perforated
plastic roof, and accessing the mice has never been easier.

tell us how you feel when you are cleaning it and trying to put the puzzle
back together again!
heh...I found out that my Crittertrail is a bit of a pain when I take it
all apart to throughly clean it.

Just a word of warning -- I had two mice escape by chewing through the
plastic lid of one of those. Not all mice seem inclined to do this, since I
had another mouse who lived in one his whole life with no problem.

I've been watching for that, but even the two that chew on EVERYTHING
haven't gone for the lids. One Bit & Two Bit (Black, identical except for
white tail markings, hence the names) even chewed on the bars of the
crittertrail. *shrug* Guess it's just a little to high up for them to bother
with. Or they don't like the taste of plastic as much as they do the stuff I
let them have for chewing.
