Hi all,
I have a beagle who is three years old. He is doing just fine but I have
a question about the crate. I keep him in it for my work week which is 5
days and 8 hours a day. When I get home he is out of course with me and
sleeps with me. My question is it ok for him to spend this much time in the
crate. Also, On the weekends he is out of the crate unless I go out. Just
want to be sure I am not hurting him. He seems fine and is always playful.
Although he does at times seem a little tired or lazy. But he does whine
very loudly when I get home. It really makes me feel horrible sometimes. Any
suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks

If he is housebroken and not destructive, he should be able to be alone in
one room and maybe eventually the whole house. My dog is 1 year old but he
just sleeps whenever someone is not home so he hasn't been crated for
awhile, just penned in my room with a babygate. Yesterday though, he proved
he might be ready for an even larger space because he climbed over the gate
when we weren't home and had the whole house to himself, upstairs and down.
I searched all over when I got home and I couldn't find anything disturbed
so he must have been well behaved. >> Stay informed about: Crate |

Why not start leaving him out of the crate when you are not in the
house, start by going out for 15 mins to see how he behaves. Once you
can trust him you can start leaving him out of the crate all day.
Have you thought about having a dog walker come at lunch time?

Yep.
Everyone told me I'd be an idiot to leave a JRT loose in the house during
the day, but we started leaving loose for short then longer periods of
time starting when he was around six months old.
We still crate him at night - just to keep him used to being crated.

I believe that liberty is the only genuinely valuable thing that men
have invented, at least in the field of government, in a thousand years.
I believe that it is better to be free than to be not free, even when
the former is dangerous and the latter safe. I believe that the finest
qualities of man can flourish only in free air - that progress made
under the shadow of the policeman's club is false progress, and of no
permanent value. I believe that any man who takes the liberty of another
into his keeping is bound to become a tyrant, and that any man who yields
up his liberty, in however slight the measure, is bound to become a slave.

FWIW, night time is what I consider the best time for testing a
new dog's house freedom. But I'm a light sleeper.

My daughter is a heavy sleeper. But she has pergo flooring, no
electrical cords and no longer any underwear in her room to chew on.
When Sammie sleeps with me on the weekends that the girls are at their
dad's, he stays on the bed all night, but when he sleeps with Mimi, he
likes to get up and wander. I know from experience she is a wild
sleeper, though, so I am not sure it is a dog training issue. Sammie
is the first dog I have allowed to sleep on the bed with me because he
actually keeps to himself and doesn't steal any covers. It has been a
good time to give him freedom from the crate. Can't do that with
other dogs, whose people waking and destructive habits shall remain
unnamed, though. It depends a lot on the dog as well as the person.

Why not simply put a dog bed on the floor and close the bedroom door at
night? >> Stay informed about: Crate |

Because I don't want to be dive-bombed in the middle of the night,
mostly.

Well, that's understandable! <G> My dogs have always slept in my bedroom and
always on their own bed on the floor. None of them have tried to get up on
my bed. >> Stay informed about: Crate |

To be fair, I only have one that still would dive bomb me, but her
sister sleeps in the crate with her because she wants to be with Punk,
loves the crate and would be too tempted to play loudly when I was
trying to sleep if not confined to close quarters. She also sometimes
gets the urge to chew something strange out of nowhere, so it's just
as well. She and Punk actually share a big crate at night even though
they have separate crates because they both like it that way. Unless
they have greenies, anyway. At that point, Lacey wants to be in her
own crate, with the door closed. She hasn't had a greenie stolen in a
long long time (I don't allow it) but she still likes to run straight
into her crate and close the door behind her when she gets hold of
something good.
