Hello all,
alt.pets.rabbits maintains a list of those of us who would like to know
when a member of our group faces extraordinary veterinary expenses
beyond his or her means. This is an invitation to join that list. We
call it Courage of Buns.
Named in honor of Rhonda’s Buns, a spirited and loving rabbit who died
in March 1999 at the age of 11 ˝, having overcome a lifetime of health
problems to offer a lifetime of joy, this is a private list intended to
protect the anonymity of both those who may need help, and those who
want to offer it. (BTW, Buns himself passed before the List was
invented, and was blessed to never need C of B help.)
Caring for bunnies’ medical needs can occasionally be astonishingly
expensive. Sometimes these expenses multiply far beyond what the
reasonable, responsible pet owner could anticipate. And sometimes our
tender hearts get us into trouble. We choose to save a beloved rabbit
that others would simply put down. We may make this decision even though
our personal circumstances are modest.
Those who join this list will have no obligation to help in any
particular case. It will surely not be possible for many of us to help
at any given time. Sometimes individual members of this list will not be
able to or will not want to help for any number of possible reasons.
This list however will give those who join it a chance to be informed
about the extraordinary lengths to which some apr bunny owners have gone
to save their pets, and the sometimes unfortunate and hurtful financial
consequences to themselves.
This list will provide an easier way to help in these circumstances,
without the necessity of discussing it on the group or publishing home
addresses on the group. Sometimes even if the gift can only be small,
simply knowing that others want to help can be a meaningful source of
support to a stressed bunny owner.
In addition, this list would allow those involved in rabbit rescue or
rabbit health research or similar worthy rabbit-related causes to post a
once-a-year appeal directly to those who have expressed an interest in
helping rabbits and their owners. [So far, none of our rabbit rescue
friends have elected to use this resource.]
If you’d like to join me on this list, please respond to my email
address above. Thanks to all of you for reading this.
