40 gallon tank.
Had a couple fish in it.. lionhead and a shibunkin.
(pardon if my spellings are wrong, kinda new)
Added one of the black 'bubble-eyed', maybe a moor?
Again, forgive my lack of knowlege here)
Long story short, ich began to show, and tho I treated
as per instructions, the three fish died over a couple day
period. This leads to my two questions... How long should
I let the tank sit before adding fish again? It's still going as
normal, just no fish in it. And was that a 'bad' group to have
together? Should you not mix (for instance) ryukins, shibunkins,
lionheads, orandas, and comets? I assumed all the various
goldfish types were compatible.
Thanks to any who may care to reply. >> Stay informed about: Couple of Questions |

4 to 6 weeks ought to be sufficient for the bug to die off without a
host to leach on. Goldies can all be kept together for the most
part. They are not savages.....Some of the more slower swimmers etc
though may have a harder time with a common comet when it comes to
feeding..............The black moors are pretty darn hardy as are
shubunkins. I do not fool with ryukins or lion heads or orandas, but
the one that can answer your questions the best would be Dr. Solo, she
is the goldfish guru. Especially on the three mentioned above......

You need to quarantine all new fish and treat them as if they were
diseased - as many are!
This leads to my two questions... How long should

I would wait 14 days. I would also use twice the dose recommend of the ick
medication since there are no fish in the tank.
It's still going as

No, all goldfish are ok with other goldfish except those that may be blind
such as the Celestials.

They're all compatible. QUARANTINE all new fish in a separate tank.

BTW without fish your tank will need to cycle again if you wait for the
parasite cycle to complete - and OK this article says a week but I would
leave it longer if you just want to let the tank sit empty....might be
best to tear it down and boil/bleach everything right now (aside from
your filter - try and keep some bacteria alive) if you have no
fish....it will get rid of the ich immediately.....you might have some
lurking in the filter but IIRC the most likely place is in the substrate
and water in the abscence of any fish....You might also try adding some
salt to the water and if possible raise the temperature - Ich doesn't
like salt and raising the temp increases the life cycle to a few
days....keep up the med doses.....doesn't matter if you go higher if you
have no fish but remember that you will need to clear the water of the
meds before you put any fish in - carbon and water changes being the way
to go....boiling and bleaching will do the same without you going out
and paying for the meds

a good rinse with peroxide and let it dry out completely.

read up on quarantine of new tank fish. It wasnt a bad group, it was a bad fish you
brought into the tank. read buying a new goldfish too.
