Hello,
My name is Janet and I have a couple questions about Corn Snakes.
My daughter, 10-year-old Grace, and I each acquired a corn snake over the
last month. She had one in her 4th-grade classroom and begged me to get her
one for Christmas this year. A week later, I just had to have my own. This
is my first experience with reptiles as pets, and we're both enjoying it
very much.
Each of our snakes are about 20" long. Although we haven't had them to a
vet, just by looking at their tail ends, it appears that Grace's snake,
Sorene, is male and my snake, Moondance, is female. They are sharing the
same vivarium, a 20-gallon-long tank, and often are laying close to each
other, sharing the same hiding spot. If we just let them co-habitate as they
grow, will they mate? I know this sounds like a silly question, but I've
read where snake owners do certain things when they want their snakes to
mate, like putting the male into a 'hibernation' mode over the winter
months, separate from the female, etc.
Also, I've read that they should be fed about 2 pinkies a week. Right now
we've been feeding them 1 pinkie every 4 days. Is this correct or should
they be getting 2 pinkies at one feeding?
Also, Sorene molted right after we brought him home in mid-December and just
molted again last night.
Moondance molted here for the first time, about 3 days ago.
Thanks for any help and advice,
Janet >> Stay informed about: Corn Snake Questions |

Hi Janet, Welcome to the addiction. I started with one and led to many
many more. Answer to your questions yes corn snakes will mate if left
together. I suggest separating them as a mating is going to happen and
will be hard on a immature female. Rule of thumb 3 feet 3 years and 300
grams. Hibernation is not needed but recommended. Just that it saves me
large feed bills during cooler months and it also helps in breeding
cycle as I find the snakes more in the mood after being brought out of
there sleep. Being a two snake house I would suggest enjoying them
without burmating. Also separating them you can keep track of sheds,
feces etc. Feeding...I would offer one pinkie rat at this stage or even
two pinkie mice at each feeding. Try thawing 2 out and giving one of
them 2 mice if they take 2nd then thaw a couple more for the other. If
there full they wont take another . They might strike then coil around
it and let it go and not eat it. I have one snake that will coil around
one and release its mouth after he thinks he's killed it and grab
another from me when I offer, coil that one also without letting go of
the first one then go back and eat 1st then 2nd one lol. What a pig!

There are many more sites but its a start... try google corn snake and
you'll find over a million hits.
Hope this helps and again welcome
You know your a herper when your freezer is full ...and there's nothing
to eat.

Addiction is definitely what it feels like!
I guess I've got myself a little dilemma, then. If I separate the snakes now
with each being 20" long, what size vivariums should I purchase? Then I
think about down the road, I'll eventually have to have 2 20-gal. vivs?
Trying to set them up in one room side-by-side would take up a lot of wall
space, but putting them on shelves, one above the other, I have to make sure
that the shelf is tall enough to make it relatively easy to get the bottom
snake in and out. How do others set up more than one vivarium in the same
room?
I'm going to try your suggestion with the pinkies. We just bought pinkies
today, so at the next feeding, we'll try and feed 2 at one time.
The male takes his good old time eating. We feed them in a separate feeding
container, and he spends the first 10 minutes or so poking all around the
sides before he finally just casually goes over and feeds - nothing fancy.
The female likes to grab the pinkie almost immediately. The last time I fed
her, I put the pinkie down and was letting her uncoil off my hand into the
container, when she grabbed the pinkie and started feeding, still partially
coiled around my hand!
I'll go and check out some of the links you cited - thanks for the info!
You're right about the hits on Google - so many that it's hard to sort
through them all. That's why advice in this type of setting is invaluable. I
read quite a bit before finally telling my daughter OK to her request! Now
the questions from the actual experience come to the surface!

I use a lidless rack system with rubbermaid containers as do most
breeders search google for snake rack then click on pictures you'll see
what I mean. This way you can house your snakes for alot less $. Walmart
knows me as the rubbermaid guy. Rubbermaid $9 papertowel .50 cents a
roll. water dishes free used plastic containers one glued down and then
i set one inside it the same size so snake cant flip it no hide needed
as rack is fairly closed in that snake feels secure. Heat source warm
room (yes they get there own room spoiled kids lol) or you can use heat
tape if you want if you cant get a warm room temp. dont use heat rocks
DONT USE HEAT ROCKS there I think I made my point lol. No heat lamps or
special lights either. Well know that I showed you how to keep snakes
cheaply I expect you to go out and buy at least 2 more lol
Also try finding a mouse or rat breeder in your area. Cost for feed will
be cut in half of pet store prices. Or breed your own ...I suggest rats
mice smell more.

Hi Carol - The corns were an excellent choice for us. They definitely are
docile. For right now, they seem to co-habitate well, and often curl up
around or under each other. We'll see what the future brings.
We got both of them in late December and they're each around 20" long now
(the length of their last sheds).
