Pippin my tiel is now 3 years old and has had my mother for company during
the day. My mother is now rather frail and spends much more time in bed
these days.

I think I should get Pippin a companion. Unfortunately lack of space means
another large cage is out of the question. Would a budgie make a suitable
companion as a budgie cage would fit into an available space. I would hope
that perhaps if they got on well they could share a cage one day.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sandra

You can get a 'tiel and a parakeet to get along. I have 1 tiel and 2
parakeets. Saiyan (the tiel) roams around the living room and kitchen quite
freely and the parakeets are in a line right behind him. When the keets
are in their cage, he will stand outside and talk to them and they'll even
come down to the bottom of the cage and stand by him. Even if he wouldn't
like the companion as much, I'm sure the parakeet would. They can share a
cage, but you would have to make it their cage and not just put the new bird
in the tiels cage. They are terroitorial and he wouldn't like that very
much. You would have to introduce them slowly, as the tiel may get a bit
fisety with him and injure it. I think it would be a good idea if space is
definately an issue.

I have a M/F cockatiels and a female budgie and they all seem to get on
alright. I had the budgie first and she seems to rules the roost so to
speak. She has her own cage though but they spend more time out of their
cages then in them. I do keep my eye on them though! Good luck with your
decision.

him in the cage with the other two and no problems, they all have thier own
perch and they will squabble but its nothing serious, its been four days now
and they all get along great. They spend 99% of thier time out of the cage,
the only time thier in it is nite nite time and if we go somewhere where
they cant come.

i first got a budgie then i got a tiel. they had their own cages. but
the budgie was loose most of the time. then she want to be with the
tiel in his cage. lot of the time.. so i let her have her way. than she
started to bug him. then one day the tiel turn on the bugdie. try to
chase the budgie away. god only knows what would happen to the budgie
if i wasn't at home at the time. i might came home to a very hurt
budgie.
so i fixed the cage so the budgie couldn't get into the cage again..
i have a friend that has a budgie and a tiel flying around in her apt.
and she they get along great . and they do have there own cages. but
when she goes out , she puts them back into their own cages
Another friend had a few of each together , BUT not in a cage. but a
spare room that he had in his house. that was ok .
but when it came to cages .the birds had their own.
so my self i won't take that change again. i feel that i was lucky that
i was home that day my tiel try to chase the budgie away.
in a cage 1 turn on the other they can't get away from the other one.
well good luck in whatever you do.

I currently have 15 teils and 1 budgie. 14 of the tiels are pair bonded,
the last lives VERY happily with the budgie. I have never had a problem
with the two of them being together.

Keep in mind, Tiels and budgies, like humans, have personalities.. if there
are personality clashes then there will be problems.. don't just brand it as
Tiels and Budgies don't get along.

14.4 minutes (1% of the time) is a very short night.
