Hi there.

I'm hoping that you might be able to give me some advice on cocker spaniels. Our
cocker (male blue roan) died recently. Whilst he was a lovely, gentle creature
(tolerated being pulled and tugged by small children with never even a growl),
he did have a couple of character flaws: he was not very person-oriented, and he
was very food-oriented. We knew another blue roan male who was very similar.
Now my wife is saying she doesn't want another cocker if the next one is also
going to be not very interactive and constantly scavenging.
For those you that know cockers: is this inherent in the breed, or was it
because he was male, or not neutered, or a blue roan, or what?
I would love to get another cocker, poss. a neutered female, but only if I can
promise my wife a more 'companionable' dog (i.e. one that likes being with
people and is not constantly looking for scoffing opportunities).

Thanks in advance for your input.

Toby

I have been a cocker owner for over 20 years, and have never had one
who wasn't very loving and affectionate. They all tend to be territorial
bout their food, but if you take the time to remove their bowl while they
are eating they learn not to snap at people. I must confess I have only
owned females, and have found they are much nicer pets if they are
spayed.I have known other owners of males. and they say unless you
expressly want to breed, then have them neutered as soon as you can..Hope
this helps

Hi there,

I've owned Cockers since 1989 and have had several rescues through my home.

They are all so different. Like people their personalities vary.
For instance, I have 2 littermates 9 1/2 yrs of age. A spayed female and a
neutered male.
Max, the male (black), is a going concern. He loves to interact with us. As
long as we throw the ball or play tug he is happy. He is also happy on his
favourite chair with his kong. He has so much energy.

His sister, Demi (buff) is loving on her terms. She is happiest when Max is
out with her. She loves him very much.
She's queen in the household...after me.
They are not chow hounds but do like their treats.

The 2 younger littermates (black) are very cuddly. They will be 8 in Jan.

I do not think it is a colour thing, I just think it is personalities.

We have had two buff male cockers, and they were both very loving dogs, who
wanted to be with someone all the time. Our current dog, who is 4 is a
typical velcro cocker who follows my wife everywhere. Cockers are known for
their love of food, so I think this is a breed-wide trait. But these dogs as
well as another cocker we took care of for several weeks while the owner was
in the hospital have been very playful, and just want to cuddle up next to
someone.
