I recently adopted a 7 year old Chihuahua. She is simply the best dog
ever, but I am concerned that if I give her her way at night she might
smother to death. Every night when she hops in bed with me, she wants
to crawl as far and deep under the covers as she can. I am very cold
natured and sleep with many heavy covers, so I fear she won't be able
to breathe or find her way out. Do I have cause to be concerned?
Thanks

Thanks for both of your replys. I do have concerns, but I have heard
about so many dogs sleeping under the covers and nothing happening.

I had someone email me with a suggestion which I thought was great and
tried it last night. - It worked like a charm! I put a blanket over
my covers and put "Pearl" under this top blanket. She thought she was
under all of my covers when actually she was only under a thin top one.
She seemed to be so happy to get to sleep like this.

Of course this is something to be concerned about. Would you be
comfortable with one of your own children sleeping so deeply under the
covers? The best place for an indoor dog to sleep is in her own bed,
preferably in a crate with a blanket or dog bed inside, next to your bed.

My chi firmly believes it is her God given right to sleep under the covers
between my wife and I. She has been doing to for the past seven years now
and has never managed to get squished. Chi's are very cold natured. If she
wants to get under the covers, it is mostly likely because she is cold. If
you are truly concerned about her sleeping in the bed with you under the
covers, try putting a small electric throw blanket in her bed that she can
snuggle in.
