Cheap Sponge or open cell foam?

Does Walmart or any other big chain store sell
open cell foam or sponge for cheap that can be
used in my filter (LFS is too expensive). I'm afraid
these pillow foams i see are too dense and may have
fungicides or other contaminents in them. I don't want
to use the polyester batting from Walmart.

Try the big scrubber pads made for commercial floor refinishing. You
can cut them to any size or shape you want. Available at Home Depot et
al
