Cruel Science: Health Charities
Some health charities ask for donations to help people with diseases and
disabilities yet spend the money to bankroll horrific experiments on dogs,
rabbits, rats, mice, primates, hamsters, pigs, ferrets, frogs, fish, guinea
pigs, sheep, birds and other animals. While human health needs cry out for
attention and so many people are going without medical care, animal
experimentation enriches laboratories and scientists but drains money from
relevant and effective projects that could really help save lives.
Healing Without Hurting
Instead of pillaging animals' bodies for cures for human diseases,
compassionate charities focus their research where the best hope of
treatment lies: with humans.
They realise that animal experiments are unnecessary, unreliable, and
sometimes dangerously misleading. Enormous variations exist among rats,
rabbits, dogs, pigs, and human beings, and meaningful scientific conclusions
cannot be drawn about one species by studying another. Non-animal methods
provide a more accurate method of testing and can be interpreted more
objectively.
Compassionate, modern charities know that we can improve treatments through
up-to-date, non-animal methods and they fund only non-animal research,
leading to real progress in the prevention and treatment of disease -
without starving, crippling, burning, poisoning, or cutting open animals.

Health Charities That DO NOT Test on Animals
What types of charities are on the "DON'T TEST" list?
Health charities and service organisations that do not conduct or fund
experiments on animals are included on the "DON'T TEST" list. These
organisations deal with human health issues ranging from birth defects to
heart disease to substance abuse. Some fund non-animal research to find
treatments and cures for diseases and disabilities, while others provide
services and direct care to people living with physical or mental ailments.
How does a charity get on the list?
Charities that are listed have assured us that neither they nor their
affiliated organisations conduct or fund any experiments on animals and will
not do so in the future.
Please contact PETA if you know the address of a charity that is not listed,
including local health service organisations. PETA will be happy to inquire
about a charity's animal-testing policy, but we also encourage you to
inquire as it is important that charities hear directly from compassionate
people who are opposed to animal testing.
The following health charities and service organisations DO NOT conduct or
fund animal experiments. For more information on the programmes and
activities of an organisation, please contact the organisation directly.

Health Charities That Test on Animals
What types of charities are on the "DO TEST" list?
Health charities that conduct or fund experiments on animals are included on
the "DO TEST" list. These organisations deal with human health issues
ranging from lung cancer to drug addiction to blindness. While some do have
relevant and effective projects that help improve lives, all of them drain
money away from these projects and into cruel experiments on animals. They
starve, cripple, burn, poison and slice open animals to study human diseases
and disabilities. Such experiments have no practical benefit to anyone. They
are unnecessary, unreliable and sometimes dangerously misleading. "Enormous
variations exist among rats, rabbits, dogs, pigs and human beings, and
meaningful scientific conclusions cannot be drawn about one species by
studying another," says Dr Neal Barnard, "Non-animal methods provide a more
accurate method of testing and can be interpreted more objectively."
What can be done to stop charities from experimenting on animals?
Many charities know that we can improve treatments through modern,
non-animal methods, and they fund only non-animal research, leading to real
progress in the prevention and treatment of disease. The next time you
receive a donation request from a health charity, ask if it funds animal
tests. Let charities know that you only give to organisations that alleviate
suffering, not contribute to it.
Please note that most colleges and universities have laboratories that
conduct animal experiments for health and other purposes. If you would like
to know whether a specific school has an animal laboratory, please contact
PETA. For information on the experiments being conducted and to voice your
opinion, please contact the school. The following health charities and
service organisations *DO* conduct or fund animal experiments.
For more information on the programmes and activities of an organisation,
please contact the organisation or PETA.
