Based on your choices, I would recommend the Cavalier. We got one from a
breeder 5 weeks ago and we love her. We have four children ages 9, 7, 4 and
2. Papillons are too delicate for children (what several Papillon breeders
told me when I was researching). Corgis are herding dogs and may attempt to
herd your son by nipping at his heels. Cocker Spaniels are over bred and
have lots of different health problems. I did all the research you are
doing now over the past year.

Definitely go to a breeder. Pet stores support puppy mills and you will
probably get a sick dog. I doubt you'll find a Cavalier in a pound. You
may find a rescue dog.

The going rate for these puppies is $1500 - 3000 depending on the breeder.

Ours is a puppy. She is great. She has lots of energy but also takes lots
of long naps. Since the day we brought her home, she sleeps through the
night (10 pm to 6:30 am) in a crate next to our bed. With this breed, male
or female doesn't matter. They are lapdogs.

Good luck to you!

Its not even close. Between the two breeds a beagle is far more
appropriate in a household with children. Beagles aren't particularly
obedient, they are noisey, but they aren't constantly looking to control
the children.

The Jack Russell Terrier is the "dog-lovers dog" It is best in a
household intending to spend virtually all their free time doing active
things with the dog. They are far too active and nippy to do well with
all but the most tolerant of children. Most youngsters quickly become
frustrated with the nippy bossiness of the JRT - it just is no fun for
them at all.

I can't let a recommendation for a Cavalier go without saying to a potential
owner: CKCS, as a breed, have a HIGH incidence of heart disease (50% of CKCS
develop MVD by age 5, by the age of 10, the percentage is in the high 90's).
If you decide to own one of these delightful pups, you MUST be aware of this,
and be prepared for it, emotionally and financially. Going to a good breeder
who follows the MVD protocol (sire and dam at least 2 years old and heart
clear, and all four grandparents age 5 and heart clear) then you have a better
chance of having your dog develop the problem later, but, currently **THERE ARE
NO MVD -FREE lines**, and don't let anyone tell you any differently.

Forgot one important point-- a regular vet cannot detect early MVD. Letters
from a regular vet are useless in determining whether or not the parents and
grandparents are heart clear. If you don't have certification from a
cardiologist, you likely do not have accurate information.

I know that the Cavaliers have a high incidence of heart problems, but I have
to say - they are a wonderful breed!

We have a delightful male Cavalier - 1 year old. He has a great temperment and
has been very healthy so far.

Only time will tell how well he holds up, and I don't know how well his breeder
minimized the chance of heart problems (we got him from my in-laws, who had
purchased him from a breeder).

Best of luck to you!

I missed the original post on this but just wanted to add my bit as I have a
gorgeous CKC boy of 7 years. I did get him from a breeder with papers, but
was not aware at the time of the heart problems. He developed a Grade 1
murmur 2 years ago and it remained so till last month, when it has gone to
Gr 2.

The vet is still happy with him, in that he's not on meds, though he has to
lose a little weight.(one kilo). This is very important, the weight thing,
And exercise. He gets plenty of that, off-leash in the park, and is on a
diet. I know people with cavvies who have the heart problem and have been on
medicatiion for years, and still doing well. I believe the med is expensive
though.

Other than that I can only support the others in that they are a beautiful
little dog, very trustworthy with kids and other animals, very loving, and
feisty. Mine loves his exercise, but needs a lot of sleep and rest too.
Not high energy. Best of luck.

Kate

We have a Cavalier as well. I purchased him from a breeder who breeds for
health and temperament. No show dogs. No dogs for breeding. I knew about the
health problems and did my best to minimize the risk (no way to eliminate
it).
That said, Cavaliers are the sweetest and most affectionate dogs you can
imaghine. Our boy is one year old and taking flyball lessons. He loves to
run and play but is quite happy to snooze on your lap any time. Quick and
eager to learn.
All purebred dogs have potential health issues of one type or another.
That's another good reason to get a mixed breed. Though, no guarantee of
health there either.
Like children, dogs are also our hostages to fortune. No matter how careful
and loving you are, your dog will die before you do. You love 'em and they
eventually break your heart. We've done our best to get and keep a healthy
puppy, but who knows?
