Hi all,

I was just wondering about your opinion of how cats handle the heat.
Curently in London is over 30 degrees C, so exhaustingly hot. They are
pretty much indoor cats, but do get access to outside only on the leash and
harness. However on this heat, I'd rather not let them out at all.

I know cats often sit on the sun and love the heat, but this is quite
excessive now, and with all that furr, I wonder if it does bother them.
Should I be giving them a shower/bath to cool them down? What do you do on
this kind of weather?

Thanks

Gee

Have you access to a garden? You'd probably find that if they were outside
they'd sunbathing or under a bush.
Cat's have no need for showers, just water to drink, remember, the ancient
Egyptians first tamed them. They like it warm.
The temperature in Cheshire has been in the high 30's in the last few days
and my two have spent more time than ever outside.
Just give them the option of either being in the sun or getting out of it,
but they like to be outside!

It's hot in Maryland too. I take mine out either early morning before it
gets too hot, or late evening after it starts to cool a little.

Yeah....I mean how many times do we worry about them because they're
practically *smouldering* next to a heater? LOL....

Same here :-)

Just let them out if they want to - they will usually just stay in a shady
place - if it's a little windy they will probably prefer to stay outside....

No need to bathe them. Just make sure they have plenty of COOL fresh water
and also lots of canned food to make them absorbe more fluids.....(70%
water)
Mine won't eat during the day at all in this hot weather, but he eats like a
frenzy at night ;-)

Animals will naturally gravitate to the coolest area. A hallway, bathroom or
closet. If you see your cat panting, you can use a cool towel or even apply
alchohol the the pads of the feet to cool them quickly. We live in
California and it is hot in our area, very hot!! Our cats usually go and
find a cool spot in the garden. Our house is air conditioned so they like
that as well. We do too!! It gets around 105 degrees in the summer here but
I have never had a problem with the cats getting overheated because the are
smart!
