Post subject: Cats & Parrots - a success!!!
Archived from groups: alt>cats, others (more info?)

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your comments on the parrots & cats scenario. I decided to get
the birds, and thought I should provide a wee update.

First of all, Tango and Tootsie have been getting supervised garden visits
over the past two months, and they do not really like the crows and
seagulls - if one is on the roof, they go insane and make clicking and
whining sounds. This worried me...

The birds are without a doubt a bonded pair, they are very affectionate to
each other, they like to sit and chat with each other, and seem to, if you
pardon the expression, "snog" each other!!! I have provided a very large
cage for them, and if one decides to go for a wander, the other chirps up,
and a full on tweeting show takes place, the range of sounds is absolutely
incredible.

I did not let the cats into the livingroom for at least 12 hours, but they
quickly knew something was up - the birdsong could be heard throughout the
entire house. The cats seemed happy to ignore the fact that the livingroom
was off limits.

The first morning, I let Tootsie, our 3 year old female cat into the
livingroom. She glanced at the birds for maybe 20 seconds, then proceeded
for the patio doors - she wanted out as usual, the birds seemed to be of no
interest.

Tango, our youngest cat - male, was second in line for the introduction - he
was much more alert and paid the birds more attention than Tootise. Saying
that, all he did was sit and stare for 2 or 3 min before getting Bored. He
then proceeded for the patio doors.

Tigger, well I have caught him up at the cage giving the birds an "eye to
eye", but he seems scared of them - he scattered when I walked in the room,
and has not been near the cage since.

The birds gave no reaction to the cats, which is a promising sign.

Overall, I would say a huge success. I will ALWAYS take precaution - the
birds will NEVER be out the cage unless the cats are locked out the
livingroom.

I will be posting pictures of the two parrots to the www.cutecats.co.uk web
site in a day or two.

Thanks!!!
