I love cats and always had cats as a child and teenager. After moving
away from home and cats for a while, I developed a pretty strong
allergy.

When I visit my friend, who has 2 cats, I take Zyrtec or Allegra, and
my allergies don't bother me, and side effects seem to be very
minimal.

I'm thinking about getting a cat of my own, and I'm wondering if it's
safe to take either of these allergy meds on a regular long term
basis.

Anyone have any experience in this area they can share?

Thanks

my BIL is allergic to cats that aren't his own. He had four at one point
and was fine. Now he has one, but when he comes to my house he reacts.

I have a friend who volunteers at the shelter and fosters kittens who is
allergic, and she takes allergy shots.

I've been on Flonsase for years. Works wonders.

When you are going to check out your potential new kitty, make sure
to not take the meds and see if you react. I'm allergic to cats, but
not to all cats. Some of the cats at the shelter made me tear up
and sneeze immediately, but I don't react much at all to our two.
While we were at the shelter, I made a point of petting them all over
and rubbing my hands on my face. That way I could be sure I wouldn't
have a fit when we brought them home.

Hello,
Same problem. I took Zyrtec in small doses (half) for a few weeks, and after
that had no more allergic reactions like sneezing and runny nose. But I
still have to be careful not to rub my eyes after petting my cat. I don't
put my face in his fur either, and I still react with swelling whenever he
scratches me. I think I developed some kind of tolerance after a while, and
loving cats certainely helps.

You could always get a Devon Rex they are an allergy free cat,
different fur and no dander from what I've been told, had one a few years back
nice cat, no allergys from her
