Hi,

I have always loved and played with cats as a child but never actually owned
one. Now, my 9-year-old daughter would like to have one, so my question to
you, cat pros, is how difficult is it to take care of a cat, given the fact
that we live in an apartment. And where do you get a cat and how do you
choose it? Are there any online resources that offer competent advice on the
subject?

Thanks.

I disagree with this part of your answer. Get a pet sitter or ask a friend
to check on your cats if you are going away for more than a day. You would
not want to come back and find that an emergency situation had occurred, and
there was no one to help.

Yes, and that can change rapidly if a cat if sick or injured. The
responsibility to take care of them in that event is like caring for a
member of the family ... which is just how I look at my furbabies.

I think it depends on the cat. Seriously. I had one cat
that had to have someone around..loved company. Sasha
on the other hand doesn't particularly like strangers. She also
will only eat dry food. When I go away for the weekend I make
sure her water and food dispensers are full and that both boxes
are clean. Then I just have someone peek in on her once a day
to make sure she hasn't gotten sick or tipped over her water or
anything like that. My sitter always says she tries to call her to give
her some attention but Sasha hides. So technically she is checking
up on the house, not the cat <g> Still...at least I know the
water is still full :-)

That's it exactly. If the cat has been sick then chances are she will
do so right in the middle of the carpet..not some place where the spot
would be unnoticeable. :-)

Sasha is easy though. Since she won't eat wet food I can have someone
come by whenever. With my other two they had to come by once in
the morning and once in the evening.
