My cat's dishes (food and water) are in a room that I do not want my
children having ready access to.. and they're old enough to defeat a
child gate.

Has anyone ever heard of a cat door for a standard room-to-room door? I
have been looking online and have not come up with anything.

Thanks in advance.

It's not a problem, unless the door is hollow-core. Cat flaps don't
install properly on hollow-core doors, so you have to provide solid
spacers for the mounting screws in order to avoid crushing the door
and leaving the flap unsupported.

There might be a better and less destructive approach: a door chain
placed so high that the children can't reach it, or even something
that allows the door to open just enough to let the cats through, but
requires tools or keys to remove it to let people through. Maybe a
key locked door chain. How about a hasp on the frame and a hasp on
the door connected by a piece of chain held in place on one end with a
split link and on the other by a padlock?

That's a great idea, and significantly cheaper than a kitty door!

Thanks!
