they only thing i could think of to try is reglan - but you have to
think of how much stimulation you want on the GI that just had surgery.
Cathy, did watson have reglan after surgery?
Also perhaps a stronger pain med like buprenex or butorphanol.
Did you try parsley.

Cathy, still very worried. I gave her metacam and baytril this morning with
a little critical care. Came home from work and gave more baytril and
critical care, which she will not take much of. She has not pooped since
leaving the vet's office yesterday evening. I am taking her back in the
morning so that they can check her incision and her hydration
level, overall another checkup. I want her to poop desperately! She is not
munching on her pellets or hay, either. Vibes for her, needing so many.
She has been crunching her teeth, what I believe is crunching, anyway and
sitting hunched up, not relaxed. Only supposed to give her the metacam
once a day. Does anyone else here give more than that? Carla and Liza. >> Stay informed about: Carla, how is Liza? |

That is a good point, Ronie, about the Reglan. Post-surgery, Watson had
Reglan, Metacam, and Albon.
I also bought a Snuggle Safe heating pad; Watson was so uncomfortable that I
could sit him on it and he would stay put for hours - I'm certain that
helped him feel a little better.
Carla, what about baby food? It tastes a whole lot better than Critical
Care; perhaps you won't have to stress Liza so much to get the baby food in
her.
Please try some of the suggested herbs; I think that the stronger it smells,
the more tempted she will be to nibble at it. I also firmly advocate being
a pest with the veggies - make the veggies nice and wet and wave it in her
little face.
Good luck, Carla. Feel free to email me directly if you would like me to
call you.

Dear Carla and Liza, I'm continuing to send healing vibes. I'm so sorry
this is happening to you. I know how much you love Liza and all that
was involved in giving her a new home after her life at the NTRS. I
keep sending thoughts and prayers. Tell Liza that Sedgewick and Jake
are rooting for a quick recovery!

Well, yesterday, I took Liza back to the vet for observation, and she
received more fluids. No poops and hardly any eating again. She is getting
critical care still. Wish it would start working. She is still grooming
herself, doesn't like the goop on her chin, my pretty girl. Yesterday
morning before I took her, she did poop a little, though. Lulled me into
false security. She finishes her baytril today and I still have one dose
of metacam, just in case. Carla and Liza. >> Stay informed about: Carla, how is Liza? |

Hi Carla,
Did you see my earlier post about baby food? If you're nervous about trying
something different, ask your vet; my vet has ~always~ wanted me to use baby
food to get the gut going.
Favorite flavors are squash and carrots. Of course, any of the fruits are
pretty popular too. I have also used canned pumpkin and unsweetened
applesauce (nothing added to either of these). These choices are good fiber
sources, and bunnies tend to like the tastes.
A little poop is a good sign; it is going to take time and patience for her
to recover from such a serious surgery.
I would also make sure that you have more than one dose of metacam on hand
going into the weekend. Has the vet given you suq-q's to administer at
home? Again, I would hope so, going into a weekend.
Have you tried any of the tasty herbs? You might need to really mix it up -
it is not unusual for bunny to shun the usual foods when not feeling well.

Miss Ivy loved the applesauce after her surgery. It was a battle with the
Critical Care but no fight at all with the applesauce, she couldn't get
enough of that.

I don't know how I missed this update...
My heart is with you. I was lucky--Tibs began eating the day after her
surgery. It was only herbs and baby greens, but she ate on her own. I wish I
could remember how long it was before she pooped. That was more than 5 years
ago, and my memory isn't so good.I know it was several days, and even once
she started, it wasn't a steady improvement.
Hang in there! We're all rooting for you and Liza.
Hugs,
Michele

Michele, what kind of herbs and what exactly are baby greens? She has been
getting very little critical care, hates it, and squash and mixed
vegetables baby food, parsley and she is hungry for something, every time
I open the refrigerator, she is straining to see if I am going to bring
her something. Don't know what it is she might want, but seems if I can
find out, she will eat it. Carla and Liza. >> Stay informed about: Carla, how is Liza? |

Carla,
I usually get our bunnies stuff from Central Market. It is more
expensive than a regular store, but the quality is good and they have a
wonderful selection of greens. I can't remember where you are at, but
there are two: one at Lovers Ln and Greenville and one at George Bush
and Plano Rd. I also like Whole Foods (I go to one on Preston and
Forest).
They have these salads that come in pre-packaged plastic "clamshells"
(they are called) and are nice organic washed greens. Sedgewick likes
the baby romaine and Jake will eat anything. They have spring mix, herb
mix, etc. They also sell fresh herbs at Central Market. And both Whole
Foods and CM keep dandelion greens, several types of parsley, and
cilantro.
I also get at CM "matchstick" carrots. They are carrots diced up like
matchsticks and are easy for the bunnies to eat. Whole Foods keeps in
their bulk section dried cranberries that aren't sweetened.
If I was in town, I'd go out and fetch you and Liza some greens, but
unfortunately we are in NM right now. I had a dream on Saturday that
Liza got better. We are keeping our fingers crossed and continuing to
send healing vibes for your baby.

Hi Carla,
I'm not sure why I seem to get your posts a day or two late...
I suggest any herb that you can get your hands on. Parsley is a hands on
favorite among bunnies, but also mint, lemon balm, cilantro, fennel, basil,
oregano, sage... Depends on your bunny and whether you have access to the
herbs. I have a neighbour who yesterday delivered me a HUGE bunch of lemon
balm.... Liza is eating parsley?? Give her more, if she is!
As for baby greens, I'm referring to the bagged stuff usually labelled
"mixed baby greens." They are usually young lettuces, mustards, and other
salad greens. That is what I brought in for Tibs the day after her surgery.
Often they have radiccio and endive in them as well, which are quite bitter,
and the bunnies love them.
I would also suggest carrot tops. If you can find radishes with nice tops,
try those greens as well. It won't hurt to offer the radishes, too, but it's
the greens that are most likely to be appealing.
Basically anything that is leafy and green. The younger and fresher, the
better.
That's wonderful that she is wanting to eat. Sounds like you are getting
there.
Have you tried carrots? At this stage, I would offer them freely.
Good luck, and keep us posted!
