Archived from groups: rec>pets>dogs>health (more info?)

Hi,,
My 55 pound best friend has a grapefruit sized mass which is rapidly
closing her trachea. As long as she is relaxed, she can breath OK, but if
she gets excited, she sort of panics and runs short of breath to the
extent that she cannot lie down since that puts additional pressure on
her tumor and thus restricts her breathing..

It becomes a vicious circle which is resulting in her being even more
tense because of lack of sleep.

I have clonazepam, lorazepam, and many narcotics on hand. Any
recommendations as to how I should deal with the current problem?

If non of those,
then my vet is currently unavailable, so I am asking you, instead of her.
She will be available tomorrow, so I am just looking for advice on how
current situation as well as what you suggest ask her for.

Also.... When the time comes, I would rather put her down myself. I am
thinking that a morphine, (or oxycodone) overdose is the best way to do
it. I could inject, but do not know where to hit a vein on dogs, so (if
she can still swallow) I figure I will give her pills.

Any recommendations on dosage? I have a few 60 mgs morphine tablets, and
a bunch of 20 and 40 mg oxycodone.

Thanks

A good option for me was for the vet to come to my house to put
my dog down.

There's no way that I could do what you're proposing.

She is my friend. I would want he to do the same for me.

euthanasia is NOT something you want to do at home. A dog's reaction to some
drugs can be quite different from that of a person, and you do NOT want to
get the dosage wrong and cause her more suffering. Most vets will come to
your home and administer the euthanasia while you are there holding your
friend. It's the best way to be sure that everything goes correctly and
that she isn't any more stressed than necessary.

I have put down several large animals. I have never heard of a narcotic
overdose going badly.

Unfortunatly, many vets are taught to use magniesum sulphate because it
is cheap. Unfortunatly, it is considered a painfull way to go.

Nonetheless... I thank you for taking the time to reply.

When I die, I want to go to where dogs go.

I'm sorry you friend has developed this condition. Surely it has not
been easy to observe.

In my very humble opinion, "the time has come." But that differs for all
of us.

You seem to have a curious and impressive collection of narcotics. I'm
surprised you haven't already calculated the Minimum Lethal Dose of
W,Y,Z for your 55 pound best friend. I won't help you.

Again, my opinion, you are absolutely playing with fire, when it comes
to your ideas about your euthanizing your dog. Euthanasia drugs are
actually cocktails containing things such as sodium pentobarbital, basic
antifreeze and methanol. They act in a sort of cascade manner, that you
almost certainly could not create with your concoction. If you happen to
calculate the MLD of whatever you propose to inject or shove down her
throat, you have no guarantee she won't throw them up; and you're not
trained in hitting a dog's vain.

I'm not sure if you have injectable drugs. If you mash up the pills and
try to inject them, please, be advised that you and your best friend are
in for a horrible experience--which would be fatal: eventually.

Keep your dog calm until tomorrow, and then ask your vet to come to your
house. For this specific task, most vets are willing. In case you have
never seen a death by professional lethal injection, I urge you to say
your goodbyes before the needle is inserted. Once the plunger is pushed,
you'll only have eight to 10 seconds.

I am sad whenever anyone loses a dog, but I can't tell you how strongly
I urge you to leave euthanasia to your vet--or even your local animal
shelter (some offer euthanasia service).

Responses to narcotics vary quite a bit between individuals. Narcotic
overdoses can cause nausea & vomiting, headache, dizziness, nervousness
& restlessness, nightmares and convulsions. I certainly wouldn't want
any of those to be the last sensation my animals feel.

>Unfortunatly, many vets are taught to use magniesum sulphate because it
>is cheap. Unfortunatly, it is considered a painfull way to go.

Perhaps for large animals--I wouldn't know. Standard practice for
euthanasia of small animals these days is an intravenous injection of
sodium pentobarbital (a barbituate), often preceded by a subcutaneous
injection of a mild tranquilizer. I have heard that worst-case for
this combination is a minute or two, but in each of the euthanasias
I've taken part in it's taken only seconds. An oral overdose of anything
would take much longer with the potential for fear, stress and other
discomfort.

If your dog is very stressed by vets, it might be possible to get
an oral tranquilizer for you to administer before the vet comes to
your house.

In sympathy,

Dianne

I agree with Matt don't do this yourself. If it's a matter of money talk to
the vet about payments if you have to and ask that they come to the house.
It's just so much better knowing they pass away quickly.

It is my sig. Perhaps you are not familiar with what is acceptable in
Usenet. I suggest if such things bother you, that you should find some
way to lighten up your life.

BTW..... Your intended interference in my life, crosses the line. Such
things are typical of bush supporters. Geeze, you people love to tell
everyone what to do. It is a wonderful trait and the rest of the world
finds it Sooooo endearing. Perhaps that is why Americans are so loved
wherever they go.

Hmmmmm... Now that I think about it.... Perhaps it would be good for you
to travel the world and enjoy some of that adoration?

Oh.... Also... I am wondering... Do you own this NG? I mean.... if it
belongs to you then I certainly apologize for breaking your rules.

Perhaps it would help if you frequently post your rules for the proper
use of your NG.

Wrong assumption on your part.

It's called etiquette - something with which you're obviously unfamiliar.
