A couple of bits of information you need to provide us first:

Where in Ontario? Thunder Bay, Ottawa, the Soo??
What type of dog are you looking for??
What about your lifestyle?? Do you have kids?? How much do you work? How
much time do you have to spend with your dog??

Forgive me if you think I am being nosey, but those are all questions that
a good breeder will ask you.

Thanks for the reply... when I say soon, I mean around x-mas time. I live
in Niagara Falls and work as a high school teacher, therfore I work long
hours but have weekends and holidays off. My girlfriend is taking a few
months off, therefore, this would be a great time to get a dog. I am
looking for a dog to keep in my house which is average size (2100 sq ft). I
have a big fenced in backyard. We want a smaller dog, ie. shitzsu or a bit
bigger. A friend of mine has a dog which is a mix between a Shitzsu and a
Chihuahua. It is absolutely great. Very well behaved, very friendly...
therefore, I would love to get the same type of dog.

I've thought of adopting a dog, but am really afraid of it having bad habits
or health. I would really prefer to train the dog when it's a puppy...
plus, getting a puppy is one of the great parts of getting a pet.

With this information, where should I be looking?

Thanks for your replies.

Actually, I should have added that my friend's dog is a male (cross between
Shitzsu and Chihuahua) and he would be interested in finding a female mate
for him before getting it fixed. Can anybody help with that??

Let me address just these points.

Adopting an older dog lets you evaluate existing health
concerns. Many congenital health problems exhibit themselves by
two years. By adopting an older dog, you have a really good
chance of avoiding common problems like idiopathic epilepsy and
hip displasia.

And generally, behaviourally, in an older dog, what you see is
what you get.

Good luck!

That's unfortunate and I hope you reconsider.

You're right - it's sad, but you'll find such people everywhere.

Killfiling just the one strange poster improves the rpd groups
dramatically.
