Has anyone had first hand experience with the breed? Any good stories to share?
Yes, I'm playing what other breed could I own again:-)

They are a pretty good follow-up to a Basenji.

That's hilarious. That's usually the first dog that pops up on any breed
picker I play with. I've never seen one. The one thing I always pick as
the highest priority is a couch spud/no exercise kind of dog.

There are a couple in agility around here. Very independent sight-hound
breeds, probably remind me most of Basenjis.

aren't "pariah" dogs just mongrels that are half wild and live in third
world cities, scavenging for food? it seems that they could look like just
about anything, depending on what they're descended from.

Hmmm, that would not be a good thing for a GSD person like myself. The Canaan
National in 2004 is in Leesburg which is ~1.5 hours from me. If I'm still
interested I plan on going and watching. According to the parent club website
they are good trackers and sound like they could be a good smaller dog for
someone used to GSDs. Will have to keep investigating.

But they tend to converge on a certain type - prick eared, curling tail, tan
often....

Canaan dogs, Ibizan, pharoahs, and a few others are classified as "primitive
breeds" by the FCI.
It's a lot more accurate than classifying them as "herding breeds" or
"sighthounds".

You know they are doing agility too? (Contact me if you are interested!).
Alan who is runnign the agilty has two and is a great guy. They are nice
dog, not as drivey as I would like, but I bet he will have the first MAch
Canaan dog...

None of the three I've met come remotely close to any of those
descriptions.

Hard - yes - resiliant - hmmm I'm not sure. I always felt training
them was a bit like training a Chessie - there's an element of
negotiation. You aren't going to MAKE a Caanan do anything any more than
you will with a Basenji. Maybe its in my definition of resilience which
includes forgiveness of mistakes on the part of the human.

Oh - no problem - they don't tend to be nervy

I like the looks of them, but the few (as in 3) I have met & interacted with
on anything more than a brief, "Hi!" has been very limited!
I like a somewhat aloof dog, but they seemed to be quite aloof (2 bitches,
1 dog). The dog was in an obedience class, and he was a handful for
his dog experienced owner (she also owned an Aussie and a GSD).

They sort of remind me of Basenjis. The male seemed to work on
his own agenda, but when he wanted to cooperate with his handler,
they were great to watch.
I like a dog that is more "needy", more in tune to what *I* want rather
than their own agenda. But, being used to Basenjis, a Canaan might
be more along what you're used to. I'd like to watch one herd, but
haven't seen any in that venue. I can only think of one person on
Herding-L
that has Canaan Dogs, and really don't remember much of their
comments about them.

I laugh...thinking that, based on this, most dogs would end up looking
like my Coda or Matt's Friday, if left to their own devices.

What self-respecting dog *wouldn't* want to look like Coda or
Friday?

Bodhi...well, so much for the self-respecting part! That boy has
no respect!
