I don't know, Emily. I find that most people really don't understand
how much exercise the average Lab needs. They see those mellow service
dogs (usually heartbreakingly obese) and assume that they're all couch
potatoes. I therefore usually err on the side of *overestimating*
their exercise needs when I recommend them to people. My 7-month-old
boy is very mellow, relatively speaking--he's from bench lines
(Dickendall, Poolstead, Rocheby)--but he still needs 2 solid hours of
walking and play every day, plus lots of mental stimulation.
My advice to the OP: A young Lab might be wonderful if you have a dog
park and will commit to using it a lot. Alternatively, an older rescue
Lab could be great, but still may require a fair amount of exercise. I
wouldn't recommend the OES, but I do think the recommendation of a
Bulldog (French or English) is good. How about a Boston? If you can
handle the snoring and gas, they're awesome.
