We have a 14 years old Border Collie bitch as a pet. She is lively and
appears in good health but drinks huge amounts of water and suffers from
urine dribble incontinence. Our local vet put her on antibiotics which
didn't help at all - we took her back again and got a highly technical
medical explanation which was above our heads! so now we are no further
ahead.
Any help would be appreciated and she's a very well behaved dog and
obviously doesn't like having her coat permanently soaked in urine.
We've put tarpaulin over the carpet in one room during the night and have to
mop up frequently. Any help on this very much appreciated.

The serious problem here is excessive drinking, which can be
caused by a variety of disorders and should be addressed.
Also, excessive drinking can lead to very dilute urine,
which reduces the antibiotic effects of urine in her bladder
and entire urinary tract and can leave her more vulnerable
to UTIs. Polydipsia can be caused by anything from
Cushing's to kidney failure to a form of diabetes. I'd
definitely get her checked out by a different veterinarian.

Thanks Melinda,
I'll take your advice about getting her checked out by a different
veterinarian.
Any advice on how to easily obtain a urine sample with Polydipsia as I feel
sure this would be useful to the veterinarian?

What I do is slip a cake pan underneath her as soon as she
starts to squat, and then transfer the sample to a sealable
(!!) container. My dog really didn't like it and when she
saw me coming towards her with a cake pan she'd give me the
hairy eye and head for the other side of the yard.

Having the dog on a leash might make this go more smoothly.
I was surprised at how easy it was to get a urine sample from Orson in the
vet's parking lot while he was on a leash. I just waited for him to start
peeing and stuck the cup in the stream. Of course you have to have a sink
and some soap nearby when you use this method.

My vet has a homemade urine-collector-thingie. They cut the
bottom off a 1-gallon Clorox bottle, leaving about 2" of
rim, and made a handle out of a wire hanger which they
attached to the cut-off bottom. It wasn't very steady but
it seems like a very handy way to deal with collecting urine
from males (which, knock on wood, I haven't yet had to do).

I take one dog at a time out on a leash and I take one of those really
cheap plastic food containers. Dog goes to squat, the container goes
underneath & voila, sample collected. Lid goes on & I mark the lid with
a Sharpie; date, dog's name, my name & my phone number. >> Stay informed about: Border Collie problem |

Thanks Melinda and Cate,
Thanks for your suggestions. Ella is going to be mystified by all this going
on. She's always been a good friend so I'd like to do the best I can for her
..
I'll let you know how I get on.

Most of time that I have seen them in Canada has been around the diapers
you put on bitches while they are in heat.

Thanks Montana,
Trouble is, Ella doesn't squat anymore - she just lets it dribble. So its
up to me chasing round after Ella with a container..hope no ones looking ;-)
Thanks for advice about the label though.
Cheers,
Mike

We had an appointement with the vet this morning (UK) but had to cancel. My
eldest son though he'd damaged his ankle last night whilst repairing his
Land Rover so I spent a pleasant time till 3am in the local hospitals A&E
....all turned out okay though. Funny how life steps in... I'll rebook the
appointment & post what is diagnosed.
Thanks,
