Actually the blood is from the other part. I have a 2yr+ small pitbull and
she has been dripping blood from her womb for about a week now. She had
puppies once maybe a yr ago, i don't know. I have had her since February
2005. She is not fixed.
Is she having an extended period or is she in heat? I have never seen this
before in dogs. I have had two Labs over the couse of twenty yrs. But those
females have been fixed.
THe pitbull (Mocha) always mounts my female black lab (Ebony). So she must
be feeling somehting. But she has been mountig and moitioning Ebony since
she got here.

Any advice on this blood so I can avoid High vet costs would be great. I
cannot afford a vet.

Steve

Pyometra has other symptoms, as well, and tends to progress

be pyometra but I'd put the likelihood kind of low at this
point.

What's done is done and while I agree that this guy
shouldn't have dogs if he can't afford veterinary care, he
does have the dogs and there's no point in frightening him
unnecessarily.

Steve, there may or may not be a problem and since you
haven't had the dog very long you're not sufficiently
familiar with the dog's heat cycle to know what's normal for
her. Pay attention to other clues like whether or not she's
behaving normally (and here I'm talking about things like
energy levels, not whether or not she's mounting other
dogs), eating normally, drinking normal amounts of water,
and so on. I'd call a vet and explain the situation and ask
whether or not the dog needs to come in. I've found most
veterinarians to be honest and helpful. If it turns out
that she needs treatment they'll likely be able to work out
a payment plan with you. Ask ahead of time.

Thanks Melinda.
She has more energy than my lab. She eats plenty and mod has not changed.
She actually doesn't drink enough water I think. Plus, it is definetly not
pus. It is blood. Only a few times the blood was rich in color it was sort
of milky. But is is back to clean blood.

I'll call the vet. And see about getting her spayed soon. I could afford the
vet if I had to. I did not ask for this dog, I sort of took her in. She is
sweet as can be and absolutely beautiful. But she is a handful and doesn't
listen well. She runs and doesn't stop. And chews anything she can. As
opposed to my 6 yrl ab that I had since a puppy, she 's mannered

I'll do my best with her.

Most areas have subsidized spay/neuter programs - sometimes the cost is
as little as $0-$5. Call your local shelter and ask - they will know about
any programs in your area. They'll be in the phone book in the local
government section (may be either city or county) and listed under Animal
Control.

I suspect that she is just in heat but this would be the cheapest way
to get her checked out by a vet. If something worse is wrong s/he can
tell you what the treatment options are and how much each would cost.
The sorts of problems that can cause the symptoms you're describing
(like pyometra, which is an infection of the uterus) are usually treated
by spaying so most or all of the cost of treatment would probably be
covered by a subsidy program.

In the meantime, be **sure** to keep her away from male dogs - taking
a chance on getting pregnant would not be a good thing for her right
now.

Good luck - I hope you will post a followup and let us know she's OK.

Dianne

THanks Dianne.

I'll do my best to remember to follow up.

I'm going to look into spaying tomorrow.

Please do not take a dog in heat out camping. That is just a terrible idea -
if there are any intact males around, you will be spending the weekend
fending them off, probably unsuccessfully. Get her spayed and keep her at
the vets for that weekend or stay home.

I did not take her out last weekend on the camping trip. She stayed home and
someone came to care for her.
She will be spayed in august. She is no longer in heat. THe vet said you
must wait at least 6 weeks after they stop bleeding. ANd she just stopped
over the weekend. So august is just right.

Otherwise she's fine.

Thanks All.
