No stones or sludge (hurray!). But also no diagnosis...
So after thinking long and hard, we decided to give him Baytril for 7 to 10
days, just in case there is another infection going on somewhere else. And
monitor him closely. He is already munching away on his food, but not his
happy go lucky self yet.
Tomorrow I will clean his pee soaked tail and belly and paws (it has dried
in the meantime, but still smells), as for today he has had enough stress.

AlmaMater is her selfcentered self ;) ! She doesn't really seem to miss him,
runs around outside as usual and enjoys all the extra (herb)treats I bought
for Bird and naturally share with her and Hendrik.

Hendrik is on full alert: Mom, there is a rabbit in da house!
Yes Hendrik, Bird will live in the bedroom for the next week or so, deal
with it! ;)

Okay, I'm not completely reassured yet, as we don't really know what's going
on, but I am very happy there's no surgery neccessary!

Thanks for all your vibes and prayers and advice. As said before: APR rocks!

Els

how did they determine nothing was wrong? did they do radiographs?
did they do a urinalysis. stinky urine and a urine soaked bottom
would indicate something with the urinary tract. 2nd on the diagnosis
list would be joint problems. is the rabbit not posturing. but i
think in your original post you said he sits in the box for a long
time.

Just wondering.

I did not want to mention anything since you were taking your rabbit to
your veterinarian. I always defer to my vet. I do have it on good
authority though, that cranberries are excellent for the bladder and
urinary tract areas. They suppress infection, and promote healing. I
have a new procedure for Professor Sparkle's home dried cranberries. I
learned this trick from Nhu. I think she figured this out accidentally.
Buy a few bags of cranberries. Throw them in the freezer. After their
frozen good and solid pick out a bag okay, and place the frozen berries
on an aluminum baking pan. Place the berries in the oven at 190°,
that's Fahrenheit, [People from Europe will have to do their conversion
to Celsius.] Bake the cranberries for four hours. After they're done
take them out and lay them on a plate. Allow them to sit for about a
day, then put them in a Ziploc and place them in the refrigerator.

The trick that I learned from Nhu, was the part about putting the
berries in the freezer. this eliminates the need to stick each berry
with a little needle in order to get the air out of them. When you
freeze the berries, that crystallizes the juice, this breaks the skin
just enough to let all the air out of all the berries. I've done this a
few times already, and berries always come out perfect. My rabbits love
them. They eat them like candy. They are actually getting a healthy
sugarless treat. Have fun.

Yes, X-rays were done and the vet showed them to me. No sign of stones. The
urine was tested for blood, but no traces were found. Crystals were minimal,
acidosity (sp.?) was normal.
That's why the vet and I are so puzzled about what to do next.
Is 'posturing' when the rabbit sticks out his bum and raises its tail before
urinating? He doesn't really do that now. But he has no problem hopping
around... He is aware that he is peeing, but doens't seem to do it
'properly'...

Do you have any other ideas, Ronie? I would appreciate them,
Els

Well, there seems some progress made, but still more to go to get
completely 100%. Still sending the positive vibes for Bird. So
Almamater likes to be outside by herself? Seems rather lonesome after
having a guy around for so long. Maybe she will notice. Carla Liza and
Jodie.

I do hope the meds help Els...bacteria can lurk in various places. Did the
vet take any blood to do a white cell count to see if that showed any
infection present??

You can give him some cranberries...not the dried ones, that will help
prevent future infections and make the bladder an unfavourable environment
for them to live in.

Keep us updated!

Whew - I saw the header and wasn't sure what "home" meant. Glad it
means your house Els. I hope the Baytril works and Bird is back to
his old self soon.

Hi Lisa,
It didn't even cross my mind that 'home' could have an alterior meaning...;)
Bird is not allowed to go to that home for a very long time!

about the same, but luckily still eating well.
Dana Krempel (from Allexperts) wrote me to tell it is often very hard to
find 'evidence' for a bladderinfection, but that all the symptoms do point
to it and that Baytril for a week should do the trick. If not, the vet will
have to make an elborate urineculture.
Thanks for asking and enjoy your day off!
