Hi
I have a 13 year old mongrel who is very active and enjoys regular exercise.
Recently I have noticed that when we return from a walk his back legs shake
when he is standing. This seems to last for a few minutes and then go away.
Is this normal or does it indicate the start of some nerve problem?

Thanks
Dave

Insufficient information to draw any conclusion. It could be a simple
chemical imbalance, or a neurological problem, or any number of things. I
recently added a 7 year old American Staffordshire Terrier (aka "pit
bull") to my pack of three (now four). Her front legs (usually the left)
often shake when she squats to urinate. She isn't in any obvious pain or
even discomfort. I had a comprehensive health check done when I adopted
her and no problems were found. So at this time I keep an eye open for
changes but otherwise ignore that behavior. But do reconsider the diet of
your dog. A 13 year old is a senior, even elderly, dog and if you haven't
changed its diet in several years it may not be getting the proper
nutrient balance.

My dog has just started to shake in the legs as well. It started about a
month ago. She is almost 11yrs old. We went for her shots last week, and I
asked the vet about the shaking. She didn't seem concerned and basically
passed it off as an old age thing. In other words I never got a good answer.
As you posted..my dog is very active too, but when she stands you can see
the leg/and or legs shaking.

.........Don't know. Could be metabolic, endocrine, nerve, muscle, skeletal.
Take your older friend in for a checkup if you're worried.

Our dogs are living longer and natural old age can kreep in. Our lab went 3
years(total 16) with shaking legs and did not seem bothered by it. Just
make sure all nails are cut to not hurt him. If your vet is not concerned I
would just keep an eye on it and seek help if it hinders his day to day
routine
