Noisy Aquaclear - Have an Aquaclear 300 on my 50g. Does a good job but it's a little too noisy for the location (impeller not water noise). Cleaned it & put in a new impeller, no change. Since I got the filter used, I don't know if it was ever..

Noisy AquaClear 500 - My AquaClear 500 was sounding a little noisy, so I decided to give it a thorough cleaning. I took the motor off for the first time in five years. (Manual says clean every three months. LOL.) But now it sounds worse than ever. The impeller looks fine,..

Aquaclear filter media question - Hi again. I have an Aquaclear 300 on my 75 gallon aquarium. It came with a sponge and a bag of fine activated carbon. I've been running the filter with these two media + a small amount of ceramic rings since I filled it in late January. I just bought.

I just picked one of these up and noticed a huge design flaw. The intake
partition is supposed to flow underneath to the filter partition and up
through the filter media and out to the tank.

Instead, even on the lowest intake setting, It spills over the top of the
intake partition into the filter partition, bypassing everything and
straight out to the tank. Yes, with overflows you will see some spillage,
but not the majority of the water, lol. Talk about bypass.

The media basket just doesn't stop if from overflowing, regardless of flow
setting.

I called the parent company, Hagen, which also makes Fluvals and they told
me they're aware of this problem and working on a redesign, but I'm not
holding my breath, lol...

With a little plastic work, basically making a better wall between to two
partitions, I could stop the overflow, but what a pain, lol...

I don't recommend any power filters that use the overflow method anymore.
Rena's new Smartfilter design is far superior, water passes through the
filter, not over it.

I haven't seen any messages about a design flaw in the Aquaclears. I hope
the person reposts it.

Can't you take it back for a refund since it is useless? Does the Rena have
those expensive-to-replace filter pads or nice thick sponges you can squeeze
out and reuse? I remember my neighbor complaining about the constant cost
of replacements for some filters (she was living on SSD). I don't remember
which filters she was using as that was a few years back.

Yea, I will. :) The Rena's filters are comparable to the price of the
other similar filter media (Bio-bag, etc)

I dunno, none of mine over flow into the outflow area and all of them
flow through the media.........When they overflow like that its
usually a sign the media is dirty. Even the holes in the basket sides
are covered over by ther sponge itself so water stil has to flow
through that media as well. I would have my doubts if Hagen does
anything since those filters have been around for many many years.
Nothing worse than being nailed down to havingto buy high dollar
proprietary filter media like those socks for Tetra whispers etc, or
the Penguins............... AC filters the sponge will last years, get
a fine mesh nyulon bag or a 99 cent pair of panty hose and fill with
charcoal which yu can get dirt cheap in bulk packs and of course the
ceramic bio pieces will last forever. Its easy to add a bag full of
chemi pure or phosphate sponge or a heater in the large
resivoirs.........and its super quick top pull out that basket and
clean and or replace any media. Heck yu can even add filter
floss.......AC's are just so nice and cheap to use and they do the job
for me.......

yea, i think you're right. i noticed my media basket's plastic was sort of
bent, which lended itself to this issue. i bet they have like maybe 1
percent flaws and i was just lucky enough to get that one, lol.
