Up to 70,000 sheep bound for the Middle East could have eaten shredded
ham after the material was discovered by authorities in a Portland
feedlot.

The shredded ham found in one of two feedlots believed to have been
contaminated by Animal Liberation activists this week would undergo
further testing, Chief Veterinary Officer Hugh Millar told reporters
in Melbourne.

The sheep will remain in two feedlots at Portland on Victoria's
south-west coast while authorities continue investigations.

The Animal Liberation group claims members used pig meal to
contaminate food and water supplies for the sheep.

Contamination would mean the sheep would not be fit for human
consumption, with legislation outlawing the feeding of animal products
to ruminants following outbreaks of mad cow disease in Europe.

Under Victorian law, fines of up to $24,000 and/or two years' jail
apply for the intentional feeding of animal products to ruminants.

Dr Millar said the substance found in the Portland feedlot was
consistent with claims made by Animal Liberation.

"It would appear to be a shredded ham-type material," he said.

"That is now in the possession of Victoria Police and will be subject
to further testing.

"Our investigations into a potential breach of the Victorian
legislation with respect to the ruminant feed ban will obviously be
ongoing."

Dr Millar said the ham was discovered in a small paddock which
contained around 1,800 sheep.

He said there was no evidence of the material in surrounding paddocks
and it was not clear how many sheep had eaten the ham.

"This would pose no danger to the sheep's health, this is an issue of
breach of legislation," he said.

Dr Millar said it would only take a few days for a sheep to digest and
dissolve protein.

The sheep were due to be loaded onto the live export carrier Al
Shuwaikh.

Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) spokesman Carson
Creagh said officers would not be issuing an export permit until the
investigation by Victoria Police and the Victorian government was
completed.

He said if tests proved positive then an export licence would not be
granted and the Victorian authorities would have to decide the fate of
the sheep.

Victoria Police arrested a 40-year-old man in relation to the
incident.

He is assisting officers with their enquires, police said.

But Animal Liberation members are hailing the protest as a victory.

"This is a fantastic result and we are pleased that our protest has
worked and the sheep will not be loaded," protest organiser Ralph
Hahnheuser said.

Despite the arrest, Mr Hahnheuser said he was confident members acted
within the law.

The protest follows the controversial rejection by Saudi Arabia of
57,000 Australian sheep aboard the MV Cormo Express because of alleged
scabby mouth.

and do you actually think this will keep the sheep from being slaughtered?
and how much HAM did the AR's have to BUY? or did they just slaughter the
pigs themselves?

It will keep them from being jammed into trucks, and then into a ship,
being bumped about in their own faeces and urine in a hold for 1-3
months, and being unloaded in a country where there are sheep diseases
that apparently farmers don't want here, and then being slaughtered
all the same but without whatever standards apply in local abbattoirs.

That is a pretty powerful set of EXTRA bits of suffering to foreclose.

I don't care how much ham they bought. Human soldiers and activists
die all the times for the good of causes. If taking the portions of a
carcass from a tin can mitigate the suffering of the living, then, on
balance, the action is defencible.

I'll be waiting for you to object that consent from the pigs in
question should first have been sought and obtained. Try it! You could
shoot me down in flames and be a real intellectual hero!

In the meantime, I'll make the "power of attorney" argument. "As they
are not mentally competent to do for themselves what they would if
they were more mentally competent, and we were unable to free the pigs
prior to their murder, we decided, as those most interested in their
welfare, how their bodies should be disposed. In our judgement, the
most we could do was to ensure that they had not died in vain. Just as
soldiers returning dead from battle are interred in the earth of the
country for which they fought, so too the animals, were interred in
their brethren as a talisman against malevolence by humans. And so it
was ... the human fear of CJD -- 'mad cow' (a pun if ever there was
one) comes to rescue the dignity of sheep."

An appropriate tribute, dramatic in its irony.

And here's hoping that the perpetrators not only get caught
and fined for feeding sheep animal products, but they get
sued into bankruptcy in the civil courts to boot.

Is the government going to buy the sheep for $10 Million dollars again, and
then bribe some 3rd world country $1 million dollars to take them?

I think it's unlikely. That would require a rather detailed
examination of the animal torture industry -- to show loss.
Personally, I'm willing to contribute to their legal defence, and will
if asked by them.

They show the best of humanity to us.

Are you kidding? The sheep will most likely be killed anyway, albeit at a
loss to the farmers. People in the middle east will be going without the
food.

And what if the pork products had transferred some kind of prion to the
sheep? Would you have been happy to see people suffering and dying to save a
herd of sheep?

Animal "liberation" is the dumbest part of the ARA movement.

These animal rights activists deserve gaol for criminal vandalism.

There are ways and means of protesting but contaminatin g the sheep crosses
the line as far as protesting goes.

Why doesn't the government buy the sheep for $10 Million tax-payer dollars
and then pay some 3rd world country $1 Million dollars to take them for free

Good on you. And you should catch a flight to Mecca and protest over there.
After all, the live shipments are only occurring because of the Islamic
requirements. Rather than supporting criminal sabotage why don't you go over
and protest about how about their "torturing of animals".

Oh that's right - like the rest of the protesters - you don't have the balls
to tackle the real problem.

You are lucky you have all those bastard farmers subsidising your
lifestyle - what was that monthly trade balance deficit again??? And when
you close down the farmers and , no doubt, those bastard miners, then we'll
see how high on the hock the lifestyle of the city elite will be after
interest rates ramp up significantly and unemployee rises to match. Maybe
you'll switch to Islam with the other disillusioned poor and demand these
live sheep for your own use. Now that would be an ironic turn.

Actually, the city is subsidising them at the moment.
