Anyone out there have an American Bulldog? This breed is NOT a pitbull, and
conciencious breeders do not represent them as such. Puppies are quite
expensive when purchased from a reputable kennel ($1,500 for mine, and she
is 5 mos. old now). I'd like to hear about general health, and temperment
issues.

if you purchased your dog from a reputable kennel, i'd think the breeder
would have told you a bit about their general health and temperament
issues... :-)

that said, AmBulls are susceptible to the standard "big breed" problems, hip
displaysia, bloat, that sort of thing. and as with other breeds that carry
the piebald gene, they're susceptible to deafness and sometimes vision
problems. they'll get sun burned on their white parts if you don't use
sunscreen (you can get sunscreen for horses at tack shops, it's cheap and
safe for dogs).

i don't think anyone represents AmBull's as pit bulls, but they do have an
awful lot in common, healthwise, so cut your fellow bully owners some slack.
:-)

temperament should be protective but not aggressive, and may include dog
aggression, so be careful at dog parks and such.

the local reputable kennel makes her buyers sign a contract stating that
they'll take basic obedience classes, in fact, i think she even pays for
them. so obedience is definitely recommended.

they're a beautiful breed, and one that i really enjoy being around. if i
didn't already own two cheap pit bulls, I'd consider getting one.

Really? You must be new to the breed.

Then what are they? Couch potatoes? Another bullmastiff? How far do you
remove a breed from it's origins that it no longer represents the breed? (Here
is a clue, look at the english bulldog).

It all depends on what your ped looks like. You have johnson dogs, scott dogs
and hybrids. Each has their own problems and benefits.
