Hello Everyone,

Aimee seems to be doing much better now...she is alert, eating - and *pissed
off*. :-) BTW, when I mentioned before that her ears were cool to the touch,
I didn't just mean a little cool, it was more like she had two mobile
Popsicles stuck to her head. I am happy to report that despite continued
inactivity, her ears have warmed up considerably. She seems much more like
her wonderful old self, except that I'm sure she isn't pleased with the
whole situation, which brings me to my latest questions. <g> (Yup, I'm
always full of questions! I refer to myself as being terminally curious.)

1. I was told at the vet's to keep Aimee in her cage for 10 days to allow
her incision to heal. Is this the standard amount of time? While I can
understand not giving her free range to do acrobatics, I would think that
stretching her legs around her room while supervised would be okay and in
fact beneficial. Are bunnies like chinchillas as in they require exercise to
maintain an optimal digestive process? She also has that collar around her
neck, and every time she goes to put her front paws down to complete a hop,
the ends of it hit first with a bit of a thump. This seems to be acting as a
very effective hobble device. She is not used to being in her cage much at
all, so I have already been taking pity on her and letting her out for short
periods of time, but was wondering if I could extend it. What are the
general protocols?

2. About that collar around her neck. Needless to say she hates it, and even
when she is outside of her cage, she spends most of her time trying to get
it off. It is wrapped in the self-adhering vet wrap. I'm not sure if it is
as a result of her constantly licking it, or if it is due to perspiration
(do bunnies sweat through their skin?) but I can see where her fur is damp
on her neck behind her ears. I am concerned about some kind of skin
irritation/infection setting in. Is my concern warranted? I wasn't sure if I
should make an appt. to take her back to the vet and have a fresh collar put
on. Also, the end of it is getting quite grungy from landing in water,
veggies, hay and the rest of it.

Suggestions on the above would be greatly appreciated!

Take care,
Martha

hi martha, i'm glad aimee is feeling better. i think it would be fine to
let her out of her cage as you are doing. as anita mentioned, if she is
sore then she won't want to do an acrobatics.

glad aimee is feeling better.

Martha, we let Jessie have free use of a room when she was spayed. She was
sore, so acrobatics were the last thing on her mind. We were lucky in that
she didn't try to chew her incision. I can't remember if you told us what
kind of stitches she has. If the stitches are metal and if the collar is
easy to put back on, you can experiment to see what she will do. If there
is any chewing, simply put the collar back on.

Glad to hear she is better. Our thoughts are with her. Poor baby.

Hi Martha:
I'm not an authority, but neither of my bunnies (Spay and Neuter) were confined
to a cage. They seem to know instinctively how much they should do. I watched
them both after the procedure to make sure they didn't overdo it, but they had
no problems. I would let her out in a limited area (maybe one small room)

Also, neither of mine wore a collar and didn't bother the stitches. When Cissy
was Spayed, the Vet concealed the stitches under a fold of skin to lessen the
chances that she might chew them. I agree with you that it is not good to have
her fur constantly wet around the collar area. I believe I would remove the
collar and watch to see if she even tries to bother the stitches. If she does
and you're worried she might chew them at night, put a sock around her middle
(or wrap her with a short piece of ace bandage) You can remove this when you're
able to keep an eye on her. She will most likely be a happier Bunny :-)

Good Luck and many healing Vibes for Aimee.

Purina green bag is supposed to be excellent. I wish I could get it here.
It is low cost and it is formulated for a stable rabbit diet. The only
question is if it will pass Aimee's taste test ;) I've never tried it for
my rabbits, so don't know how tasty it is.

Good point about cecotrophs, Sue. Some people collect them and put them in
a bowl so the bunnies don't miss getting their rabbit brownies :)

Hi Wendy, when I had both my girls spayed the vet encouraged exercize, she said
that it helped in the healing process and got the appetite going. Both were
stitched up the same way you describe and neither bothered the stitches. Now I
have a question for you.... with this lazer surgery, is the uterus removed or
is it more like a tube tying ? Janice
