Hi Martha:
I'm not an authority, but neither of my bunnies (Spay and Neuter) were confined
to a cage. They seem to know instinctively how much they should do. I watched
them both after the procedure to make sure they didn't overdo it, but they had
no problems. I would let her out in a limited area (maybe one small room)
Also, neither of mine wore a collar and didn't bother the stitches. When Cissy
was Spayed, the Vet concealed the stitches under a fold of skin to lessen the
chances that she might chew them. I agree with you that it is not good to have
her fur constantly wet around the collar area. I believe I would remove the
collar and watch to see if she even tries to bother the stitches. If she does
and you're worried she might chew them at night, put a sock around her middle
(or wrap her with a short piece of ace bandage) You can remove this when you're
able to keep an eye on her. She will most likely be a happier Bunny :-)
Good Luck and many healing Vibes for Aimee.

Hello Everyone,
1. I was told at the vet's to keep Aimee in her cage for 10 days to allow
her incision to heal. Is this the standard amount of time? While I can
understand not giving her free range to do acrobatics, I would think that
stretching her legs around her room while supervised would be okay and in
fact beneficial.
She also has that collar around her
neck, and every time she goes to put her front paws down to complete a hop,
the ends of it hit first with a bit of a thump. This seems to be acting as a
very effective hobble device. She is not used to being in her cage much at
all, so I have already been taking pity on her and letting her out for short
periods of time, but was wondering if I could extend it. What are the
general protocols?
2. About that collar around her neck. Needless to say she hates it, and even
when she is outside of her cage, she spends most of her time trying to get
it off. It is wrapped in the self-adhering vet wrap. I'm not sure if it is
as a result of her constantly licking it, or if it is due to perspiration
(do bunnies sweat through their skin?) but I can see where her fur is damp
on her neck behind her ears. I am concerned about some kind of skin
irritation/infection setting in. Is my concern warranted? I wasn't sure if I
should make an appt. to take her back to the vet and have a fresh collar put
on. Also, the end of it is getting quite grungy from landing in water,
veggies, hay and the rest of it.
Suggestions on the above would be greatly appreciated!
Take care,
Martha
