My ~10 yr old Timneh has recently picked up a digging behavior in his
cage. Is there a special reason why they are doing this? I do not know
if "he" is female or male.

Maybe he's just doing it for fun but i thought i'd ask :)

My CAg does this all the time. She will get down on the paper lined pan
of her play stand and look chust like a chicken scratching for food. I
have seen pictures of greys in the wild feeding on the ground, so
perhaps they scratch for food like the chickens?

'Tis a grey thang :). Interesting that it's taken this long for him to
start eh?

My TAG Earl started it as a baby and he now knows it's just the thing
to piss me off.

If he's frustrated - can't get past the kettle on the counter or
something like that - he'll stretch out with his head against the
kettle and kick out with his feet behind him. He used to do it against
the screen on his travel cage. I've always though it was "baby bird"
behaviour, but maybe not.

Is this similar to what your grey is doing?

Hi!
Long time lurker, infrequent poster here . .
We have a CAG, a little over 19 months old, who did that frequently as a 4
month old when we first brought him home - and you're right - it was
aggravating for sure. He would do exactly as you say - put his head
on/between the bars, and kick out his legs behind him until he had worn a
shredded groove in the newspaper bottom. Made me crazy! He is much less
apt to do that now but has picked up another less frustrating, but still
potentially crazy-making habit wherein he hangs onto the vertical bar with
his beak and "walks" his feet over and over again in the same place on the
bar while hanging on, one over the other, then repeat! It's usually his sign
that he wants out. These guys can have some grating habits, but ya gotta
love them when you hear "Bye-bye" in the a.m. as you set off for work!

Thea
One CAG
One TAG
One whistling, talking, bell ringing, chirping, feather-preening,
food-flinging, birdie household!!

Ok, that's probably it.. Kinda strange that he starts this after about
10 years, he used to hate being on the bottom of his cage.

They start digging at around 8 weeks of age and continue thereafter if the
surroundings permit it. It is very apparent in breeding pairs and is a
precursor to laying eggs.

Well, I have to disagree as my bird is out of her cage when she does
this. She climbs down to the space between her playstand grate and the
part that holds newspaper and digs at the paper. I have never seen her
do it in her cage.

Surely a well brought up grey would politely ask to come out?
